Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
